All across the world, something really awesome is happening: People are celebrating women. March 8th has been the official International Women’s Day since the early 1900’s and the tradition still lives on. Some countries even consider it a holiday, on par with Mother’s Day as a reason to treat moms to something special.
This year’s theme is ‘Inspiring Change’ which is something that definitely needs some promotion. If you want to know just how popular this day is, all you need to do is go on Google and see the great Doodle they created. Because women deserve a little recognition on this day created just for them.
UN Women is also using today to launch their HeforShe campaign, which is endorsed by celebrities like Matt Damon and Antonio Banderas, that has men speaking up for women against violence and abuse. They actually have a whole Youtube channel of videos that have men voicing their pro-women stories. Sadly, it doesn’t seem to be getting many views.
There are events going on around the world to celebrate women. There’s even a few local events such as a speech reenactment at First Churches Sanctuary in Northampton from 12-9pm and an International Women’s Day Fair sponsored by Afri(k)que on Parker Street from 1-5pm in Springfield.
Women make up more than half of the world’s population. They shouldn’t be treated like half a person because of it. Make sure today you celebrate all the women you love in your life.
